What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique, developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander (Tasmania 1869-London 1955), is a psychophysical re-education process, whose main objective is to change the way we respond to the stimuli that surround us; that is, it seeks to replace our automatic reactions with rationally chosen actions.
In young children we see clarity of intention, quality of attention, and physical balance that allows them to sit, stand, and move with grace and ease. However, over the years, due to imitation; to excess physical, mental and emotional stress; Due to the poor design of the furniture we use, most people develop habits that interfere with their natural posture, coordination and functioning, automatically reacting in ways that limit their well-being and reduce their effectiveness in daily life. In terms of the Alexander Technique, we say that we are misusing ourselves.
The Alexander Technique promotes restoring the balance of the entire human being so that it can maintain it when responding to the stimuli it receives, whether internal or external. This encourages the person to resume their ability to choose, in a conscious and coordinated manner. In this way, excess tension, physical and mental wear and tear are reduced, which results in greater mental clarity and, therefore, in a more efficient performance in any activity that is carried out.
The Alexander Technique is a learning process that promotes greater ease and efficiency in any activity.

"Eliminate habitual physical and mental patterns that limit your freedom of action and choice."
"My husband, who is a double bass player, had suffered an injury and despite having taken a fairly complete rehabilitation program, he had not been able to recover the ideal function of his arm. We both started going to Alexander Technique classes and it turned out to be a discipline that It not only affected our body but also our mind, because despite being a class that requires the active participation of the student, it seems like an oriental philosophy since it is based on not-doing to do better."
Lourdes Ambriz, Singer

"Eliminate habitual physical and mental patterns that limit your freedom of action and choice."
"The Alexander Technique offers us everything we have been looking for in a body education system: relief from excess tension due to imbalances, improvement in physical and mental health; (...) and along with this, an increase in awareness for all levels."
Aldous Huxley, Writer
What happens in an Alexander Technique lesson?
Classes are individual and last 45 minutes. The teaching-learning process is as follows:
The teacher teaches you the acquired psychophysical habits, which interfere with the efficient use of yourself and with your ability to choose. For example, how you compress your spine or if you make unnecessary efforts in the performance of some activity.
Through verbal instructions and the use of her hands, the teacher guides you to restore a correct relationship of the neck, head and back (primary control), which will allow you to have better coordination, both in activities of daily life -walking, talking, sitting and standing up-, as well as in more complex and specific activities that you carry out.
With this you will learn alternatives that do not involve the usual patterns of excess tension and psychophysical imbalance, so that you can find a way to match the stimulus, the intention, the intensity and the aspects of you involved in the response.
By changing your habitual patterns and reactions, you rediscover the balance of your body and mind, of you as a whole.

"The teacher guides you to restore a correct relationship of the neck, head and back, which will allow you to have better coordination."
"The Alexander Technique has been a very useful tool in my performance as a concert pianist. I acquired a much deeper understanding of how the body works and, most importantly, I was able to apply it immediately to the execution of my piano repertoire. I highly recommend this technique to performers of all instruments and singers, since by putting it into practice they will feel greater freedom and technical ease in their interpretations."
Joseph Olechowsky, Pianist and Composer
Who is the teacher Claudia Montero?
I was the first Mexican to become an Alexander Technique teacher at "Victoria Training Course for the Alexander Technique", a school endorsed by the STAT (Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique) in London, Great Britain (1988 - 1991). I founded the Alexander Technique Teacher Training School in Mexico in 2015.
From 2010 to date, I have worked as an Alexander Technique teacher at the Carlos Chávez School Orchestra of the National System for Musical Development.
Since my return to Mexico in 1991, I have given private classes to people from very diverse occupations, as well as courses, workshops and conferences in various institutions, mainly art education at a higher level, as well as health institutions.

"First Mexican to obtain a Master's degree in the Alexander Technique at Victoria Training Course for the Alexander Technique, a school endorsed by STAT (Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique) in London."
"At the beginning of the 90s, I had a serious crisis of tendinitis caused by various factors: Stress, sudden changes in temperature, but above all muscles and tendons affected by overuse, aggravated by poor posture. I tried everything: Chiropractors, acupuncture, exercise, etc. I met a teacher in the Alexander Technique and from there a notable improvement began. Back in Mexico, I had the pleasure of meeting the teacher Claudia Montero, who was in charge of giving me the last touches to get to know technique in depth. Thanks to this I was able to correct incorrect postures that led me to a better development in my career as a musician."
Javier Montiel, Violist of Cuarteto Latinoamericano

Training to be a teacher of the Alexander Technique
Training to become a teacher is a very enriching and enjoyable process since the emphasis is on working on yourself, with which deep transformations usually take place. The work consists of observing and studying the use of oneself in procedures and practical activities, deepening the principles of the Alexander Technique. Learning an efficient and balanced way of working and using oneself is essential to be able to transmit the Technique to other people, as well as to develop the refined work of the hands, which is characteristic of the teaching of the Technique, of the future teacher.
The training process is based on the procedures Alexander used in his teaching to convey the meaning and application of his principles to students.
This continues to be recognized for teacher training schools endorsed by the "Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique" (STAT) in the United Kingdom since it is still considered the most reliable way of communicating the essential aspects of learning.
The teaching method is fundamentally practical, the essential principles of the Technique are presented and worked from the beginning, and these are continuously revised as the students progress in understanding these principles and the use of themselves, to continue like this, deepening in their knowledge, understanding and skill.

"At the end of the training, after having rewarded yourself for 3 years, you've obtained very effective tools to help others, and to earn a living in a very gratifying way!"
The Alexander Technique does not teach you to do something new, but to do what you already do with more practical intelligence, to eliminate stereotyped responses, to understand habits and their transformations. "It gives you the freedom to choose your goals, but allows you to make better use of yourself as you work toward them."
Frank Pierce Jones
